Sept/Oct Test Drive Meme

Alpha Complex Test Drive Meme

Please feel free to take a Test Drive to see if the environment would suit your character! All potential players are welcome.

It may be your first day in Alpha Complex or your hundredth, either way, you are in serious trouble.

Scenario One
Your character has been accused of treason!

Whether the accusation is true or not, you are a wanted citizen!  Do you turn yourself over to IntSec (Internal Security) for questioning?  Do you make a run for it and go AWOL?  Will you fight for your right to exist or hole up somewhere safe until the chaos passes?  Do you become The Fugitive and try to prove your innocence?  Or are you guilty as hell and seeking help from friends or other parties who would be willing to assist you for a price?

Beware of the security cameras everywhere - some of which actually work - and being spotted by citizens who might be willing to turn you in to gain points with The Computer or to prove their own loyalty.

Scenario Two
Your character has been given the mission to hunt down a traitor!

It is your job to hunt down and apprehend the traitor by any means necessary.  If you fail or refuse, you might be accused of being a traitor yourself.  It doesn't matter if the person you are hunting is innocent or had good reasons for their treason.  It doesn't matter if their crime was major or some minor form of treason, Friend Computer wants their head.  You have twenty four hours to complete your mission.

Please post your character name and fandom in the subject line.
Work Together. Turn On Each Other. Survive.

The sound of another female's voice pulls Zatanna out of her own personal reverie and she looks to the source, seeing the girl who doesn't look a whole lot older than she is, if not the same age, sitting against a wall with her knees drawn up to her chest. She looks...sad, Zee thinks. Or maybe sad isn't the best word to describe her, but it's close. At least, she thinks.

"Me? No...I'm supposed to be looking for a traitor to bring them in, but..." her voice trails off. But it isn't the right thing to do. It just...isn't. She wouldn't do it at home and she doesn't want to do it here. The thing is, if she fails the mission, does that then make her a traitor? Zee isn't really sure she wants to find out, but at the same time, she isn't sure she wants to do what she's being told just because she's being told to do it, either, because that's probably not good...at least, not if the person doesn't deserve it and, honestly, most things considered treasonous activities are really stupid reasons for someone to get punished, if you ask her.

So she shrugs a little, brow creasing and a small frown tugging down the corners of her mouth with discomfort. "I don't know. I don't think I can do it. Turn someone in, I mean."

She shouldn't feel sad, should she? Katniss isn't certain what memories ought to be in her head if the computer is right about the glitch, but they can't be nearly as sad as the ones currently lingering in her mind. She wants those memories. The memories she's supposed to have as a citizen of the complex. Then maybe she'd understand why she's been labelled a traitor. For now, she's lost. Confused, angry, mournful. Close to drowning in the turmoil inside of her.

It would be easy to drown. Or to let the girl do her job and turn her over to the authorities. Yet, as soon as Zatanna identifies her task, Katniss' spine straightens. Although sorrow remains present in her eyes, there's wariness there too. Any second and she'll bolt. One wrong move. Because as much as she wants to drown, she wants to survive too.

Except... except she deserves it, doesn't she? To be turned in? Because fire caught rampant around the Districts. Because of the Mockingjay. They're thoughts that she doesn't understand and Katniss shakes her head, trying to get rid of them.

She realizes after that this would have been a good time for the girl to act. Katniss is falling inward again, losing herself in the maze of her mind. The girl doesn't. And Katniss scowls. "You're not very good at your job."

At the comment she receives in response, Zatanna balks back at the girl. Well, that's no way to thank someone for letting you off the hook, she can't help thinking. Although, then again, maybe this isn't the person she's looking for, anyway, so maybe it doesn't matter.

All the same, the incredulity she feels as a knee jerk response to such a remark has her huffing out indignantly.

"Yeah, well, that's because this isn't my job. This isn't my home, this isn't my wardrobe," she says, tugging distastefully at the collar of her hideous, ill-fitted jumpsuit, "and this is not the way I should be wasting my time. I'm a superhero. I should be...superheroing," she stammers, frustrated.

On some level, she's aware that she shouldn't respond to someone willing to help her as she had. On some level, she knows that most people would be grateful. Or use this as an opportunity to learn more about what's going on. But she's not very nice or very smart or very good at making any kind of plans, really. She acts without thinking and never seems to learn better.

Katniss doesn't entirely believe her when she says this isn't her job. Mostly because on some level, deep down, she does believe that she's betrayed someone at some point. She is a traitor. She doesn't want to be taken in to wherever it is she's supposed to go (live, she's supposed to live) but maybe she deserves it. Maybe. She doesn't know. The glitches of memories make everything so hard.

But she does manage to ask, "What's a superhero?"

"What's a—?" Zatanna starts to echo the question back at the girl only to cut herself off with another indignant huff. What's a superhero? That's a hell of a blow to Zee's ego if there ever was one. At this point in her life, it feels like superhero kind of defines her and she doesn't really...know how to describe it when she comes from a place where everyone just...already knows.

Her jaw hangs loosely open for a moment while she tries to formulate a response. "It's...kind of exactly what it sounds like? Heroes...but better? With...super powers?" she asks more than answers because she's never actually had to explain it before and that's sort of the best she can come up with at the moment.
stillplaying: ([indifference] doubtful)

In those glitched memories, the word superhero doesn't ring a bell. She doesn't think it's something that exists in District 12 or anywhere in Panem. She isn't even sure it's a word that exists here in the Complex, either. What's the point of heroes? To provide hope to those who have non? A world where heroes exist is a world where she wouldn't have memories of a sister dying a horrible death.

Katniss is quiet for a few seconds after Zatanna's explanation. Her lips remain pursed together in an wary frown as she considers the words. Heroes but better. That doesn't mean anything to her. The closest thing that comes to mind is the idea of muttations but muttations aren't supposed to be anything good. Finally, Katniss shakes her head. "What kind of powers?"

It's weird to consider the fact that there might be people in the Alpha Complex that Zatanna will come across in the future who, like this girl, won't know what a superhero is. They're so prevalent back home, it boggles her mind to consider. Back home, the Justice League is a known and respected entity; civilians look to their superheros and metas to protect them and serve them, like the police except with the kinds of powers that can stop villains that the police can't even touch.

The other girl asks what kinds of powers and Zee takes a deep breath, letting it out softly. "Uh, well..." she starts with a little shrug. "I had magic. I could say spells and things would happen or people would do what I needed them to do. Bad guy about to kill somebody? Make him drop his weapon. Need intel to track down a baddie, make their sidekick talk when they won't. Put up a psychic sort of shield to protect a friend in trouble when fighting the good fight? All I have to do is say the spell."

She pauses then, frowning. "All I had to do, anyway. I can't do it here. My spells don't work. It's so lame."
